Associations and Professional Organizations

Every profession has at least one association or organization that brings together the community to set guidelines, standards, principles, and regulations. These groups often publish newsletters and journals, hold webinars, and sponsor meetings and conferences. Their websites often include career information, such as requirements and job listings.

To find the association for the field you are interested in, do a search for the name of the profession or career and add the words association or organization. You may also want to include the text. "site:.org" to limit the results further.

Look at your results with a critical eye to make sure you are finding legitimate sites.

Example Search and Results

I searched in Google for fashion professional organization site:.org

My first result was a list of professional organizations from the New York Public Library which I consider to be a trustworthy source.

I looked at the websites of the associations and organizations and found that each organization has its own way of presenting information. Some organizations require you to become a member and others are more open. These types of sites are good for finding people who work in the field and discovering the newest trends or current challenges.
