HIS 2418 Modern Expressions of Asian Religions: Home

Doing History Research

When doing history research, remember these things:

  • Books are often helpful, and sometimes more helpful than articles
  • You don't need to read a whole book; find the chapter or section about your topic and read that (use a table of contents or index to find the relevant section)
  • More recent doesn't necessarily mean better; an item published at the time of an event may be just as useful as a later item

A note on Asian names

The spellings of Asian city and personal names can vary because there are different ways of rendering names originally in Asian language characters (Chinese, Korean, Sanskrit, etc.) into English. This process is called Romanization. An example is the name of China's capital city, which used to be rendered "Peking" but is now rendered "Beijing."

Databases will often have a preferred Romanization, which can be found in the database's thesaurus. Often, the preferred Romanization will give you all the articles in the database, but if you see other Romanizations in your results list, try searching for them as well.
