Focus Paper on Controversial Biblical Texts incorporating relevant chapters from Discovering Biblical Equality (20% of the grade)

This paper should be 5-6 pages long.  It is essential that you review the reading from Discovering Biblical Equality, chapters 20 and 21 on biblical hermeneutics and your summary paper of this material from January 10th before you begin writing this paper.  Discovering Biblical Equality deals with biblical passages related to women that have been understood in a variety of ways.  Choose one of these portions of Scripture on which you would like to focus—one that is dealt with this text.  Using a variety of

  • sources (at least 3 academic journals) and
  • commentaries (at least 2 Bible commentaries)

explain what the various interpretations of this passage have been, along with a summary of the views on your chosen texts as conveyed by Discovering Biblical Equality.  Include a final section in which you summarize the interpretation of these verses that you find most consistent with the overall direction of Scripture (with reference to biblical hermeneutics, the nature of God as revealed in Jesus Christ, what it means to have been created in the image of God, reconciled in Christ to God and to one another, filled with the Spirit of God, along with examples of women from Scripture…).   Do not use any online sources unless they are from a scholarly journal (no more than 2 online sources and check with me if you have any questions about the online source you want to use).  This paper is due February 14th.
