Gettting Started in Literary Research

When conducting literary research, you will come across materials that are by the author, about the author, and about the author's work.

Make sure you know what you need and what you are using!

For example:

By the author (primary text):

  • The complete plays of Sophocles / Sophocles. Jebb, Richard Claverhouse. [PA4414 .A1 J4 2006]
  • Sophokles : the complete plays / Sophocles. Carl Richard Mueller. [PA4414.A1 M84 2000 ]
  • Oedipus the King / Sophocles. Stephen Berg. [PA4414.O7 B44] 

About the author (biography and autobiography):   

  • The lives of the Greek poets / Mary R. Lefkowitz. [PA3064 .L44 2012 ]
  • Greek and Latin authors, 800 B.C.-A.D. 1000/ Michael Grant. [PA31 .G7 1980]     

About the author’s work (analysis, criticism and interpretation): 

  • Moral awareness in Greek tragedy/ Stuart Lawrence. [PA3136 .L39 2013]
  • A commentary on the plays of Sophocles / James C. Hogan [PA4417 .H64 1991 ]
  • Tragic play : irony and theater from Sophocles to Beckett / Christoph Menke. [PN1892 .M4513 2009 ]
